[FLORIDA] BYRNE, BERNARD M., M.D., U.S. Army Letters on the Climate, Soils, and Productions of Florida.
Jacksonville: Printed at the Office of the News, 1851. First edition thus. Original printed wrappers with woodcut border. 9 x 6 inches (23 x 15 cm); 28 pp. Old stitch holes along left margin, a few old stains, a good copy of a scarce work.
This is an uncommon work and this is the only copy reported on Rare Book Hub as listed with Goodspeed in 1967 and 1971 at $250: "Rare. The author, a U. S. Army physician, attempts to correct adverse opinions of the healthfulness of the climate and the fertility of the soil formed by soldiers who had merely 'marched over the Peninsula' in the recent Seminole War. He admits that 'Fleas are much more abundant in Florida than they are in the Northern and Middle States" (Goodspeed). Howes and Sabin make note of an undated Ralston, PA printing, which possibly precedes this issue but was on only 15 pp., see Sabin 9725 and Howes B1079.
