Later quarter paper spine with marbled paper boards. 8 x 5 inches (20.5 x 13 cm); viii, [9]-89 pp. Wear to boards, spine toned and chipped, front joint cracked and weak, nearly detatched, rear joint starting, contents moderately spotted and toned.
A rare early-nineteenth century American printing of the Fables de la Fontaine, with notes on difficult vocabulary, the elogy for La Fontaine by La Harpe, and a preliminary notice about the author in English. L'Economical School was established by the fascinating and talented Baron and Baroness Hyde de Neuville as both a bilingual school for French and Caribbean emigrés and exiles, and a charity school offering affordable education to impoverished children and adults.
