[MANUSCRIPT-LIQUOR and DISTILLING] [ANONYMOUS]. El Estilador Licoristal.
N.p.: n.d. [but from the recipes, which include mescal and tequila, and the provenance] likely Mexico: 1850s-1870s. Calf-backed marbled boards. 8 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches (21.5 x 16 cm); 197 pp. including additions written in several neat hands. Boards worn, stained, occasional minor foxing internally. With the small embossed seal on many leaves of "Carrillo Benfield y Orozco, Mexico".
We find at least one other manuscript bearing this blindstamp (an illustrated ms. in Nahuatl) but we have not been able to trace the collector, if collector this is. The work is extremely detailed and neatly presented, and it seems possible that it was intended for publication, but we do not locate any work that resembles it. It contains recipes for both pure alcohol and a wide array of liqueurs, some quite esoteric, together with the previously noted recipes for mescal and tequila. A second section commencing on page 91, entitled "El Arte de ahcer vino en todos los paises y conservacion" discusses wines; this may be based on a known work of this title that was in circulation earlier in the century. While manuscripts on distilling are, as a class, not uncommon, examples with a Mexican locus are rare.
