Lot 232
[MEXICAN WAR/FLORIDA-BALLENTINE, GEORGE] Autobiography of an English Soldier in the United States Army. Comprising Observations and Adventures in the States and Mexico.
London: Hurst & Blackett, 1853. First book edition (previously serialized). Two volumes, publisher's cloth, housed in a custom slipcase. 8 x 5 inches (20 x 13 cm): 306; 316 pp. Somewhat shaken with cracked hinges and some spotting, but unrestored and nicely presented with only slight fading to the spines.

Ballentine served in the American Army in both Florida and Mexico. "Ballentine served in Scott's army. The book, which was apparently written from memory, contains observations that seem accurate, although the author did not have the revulsion for camp life and military discipline that most soldiers expressed" - Connor & Faulk 72; Clark, Old South III:125.1; Howes B77; Sabin 2465.
