PENN, WILLIAM Select Works of William Penn. To Which is Prefixed a Journal of his Life.
London: Printed in the Year 1771. First collected edition. Contemporary calf with raised bands 15 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches (41.5 x 24 cm); [6] lxi, [1]-862 pp. (the advertisement and contents at front). The cover worn and detached along with the front free endpaper, one cord sprung, other small losses and wear to binding, dampstain affecting title and text throughout, sold with all faults, signatures and inscriptions at front (see below), early American booklabel of William Savery to the pastedown.
A massive tome collecting the writings of William Penn by his son William, in an early and likely American binding and with a Philadelphia provenance. The title page is signed neatly by John Reynell (1708-1784) who with his wife Mary Coates (1707-1773) established an important Quaker dynasty in Philadelphia. The front free endpaper is further inscribed in 1784 from Samuel Coates, nephew of Reynell, as a gift to William Savery, Jr., son of the Philadelphia cabinet maker. The volume features Savery's early American booklabel.
