Spotting which is heavy at places, institutional booklabels and bookplates, a nicely bound set, not fully collated and the lot sold as is; Together with the revised English edition of Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan. London: Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co., 1854. The revised English edition. Illustrated by Frederick Catherwood. Publisher's cloth. 9 x 6 inches (23 x 14 cm); 548 pp., ads., profusely illustrated with plates after Catherwood. Slightly cocked and rubbed, very clean within, not fully collated and sold as is. This sold as part of lot 96, Christie's 24 September 2003; And VELASQUEZ, PEDRO [pseudonym]. Memoir of the Eventful Expedition in Central America resulting in the discovery of the idolatrous city of Iximaya ... and the Possession of two Remarkable Aztec Children ... described by John L. Stephens. New York: Applegate, 1850. First edition. Wrappers. Illustrated. Small losses to wrapper and title. This work is considered a hoax, possibly by P.T. Barnum attempting to capitalize on the expeditions of those like Stephens. Sabin 98812.
