Publisher's brown boards with printed spine labels, housed in a modern slipcase. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches (22.5 x 14 cm); xiv, 373, [1], 2 pp. ads.; viii, 310, [2] pp.; half-titles, 2 hand-colored aquatint frontispieces, 4 engraved maps (2 folding), 14 uncolored aquatint plates (3 folding), 11 wood-engraved plates. Uncut in original boards, slight split to the joint in the second volume, still overall an exceptionally clean and sound example. Handwritten ownership in each volume of Lord Fitzhardinge, Berkeley Castle (probably the third peer, d. 1916).
Colville, a Royal Navy lieutenant (later an admiral), started his 15-month journey from Vienna. His voyage is presented in the form of a travel journal and is illustrated after his drawings. Abbey Travel 26; Atabey 460; Blackmer 628.
