[MIDDLE EAST] GRIFFITHS, J.[ULIUS] Travels in Europe, Asia Minor, and Arabia.
London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1805. First edition. Half calf over boards in period style, edges sprinkled blue. 10 1/2 x 8 3/8 inches (27 x 21.5 cm); half-title, xx, 396 pp.; portrait, folding map, two regular and two folding plates. Light wear, some minor offsetting between text pages, generally a clean, sound copy.
Griffiths' account is generally an interesting one. He first travelled in the company of the reformer Jeremy Bentham, before continuing his travels through Constantinople, Scutari, Mytelene, Chios, Smyrna, Aleppo, Basrah and down the Persian Gulf to Muscat. He recounts his harrowing experience during the latter part of the trip in losing David Hays, his travelling companion, to thirst and heat. Hays died in the presence of his young daughter, who was travelling with them, and who had a narrow escape herself from the same fate. Atabey 530; Blackmer 755.
