The entry for this painting in the 1842 Royal Academy Exhibition catalogue is accompanied by the following unattributed poem, possibly by the artist himself:
The broken moonbeam on the ripple plays;
And many a cheerful burst of laughter rings
Thro' the still ev'ning air, from jocund swains
And village maidens blythe. Their simple revels
How shall she join?--she slighted and alone?
Swells the void heart and gently rise the tears,
As, conscious of neglect and blank'd affection
She views the happy pairs.
