[MAERSCHALK, FRANCIS M.] Manuscript plan of Philip Minthorne's land in Bowery 3.
Manuscript in ink on paper, with ink notation "1765 Oct. 15th/Surveyed for the heirs of Philip Minthorn/By FM." 12 1/4 x 16 1/2 inches (31 x 42 cm). The map is backed. Small losses, old tears, dust soiing and light spotting.

A very early map dividing up the lands of Philip Minthorne, born in December 1696 at "Bouwerie, Out Ward," known today as the Bowery. Minthorne had 9 children and each here receive a slice of this fan-shaped property. Names of those married into the Minthorne family include Romaine, Banta, Hallet, and Cock. Smaller parcels are separated by a path are divided among the same names. These Bowery lands came into the possession of Philip Minthorne around 1732. The land had previously been granted from the Dutch to Gerrit Hendricksen in 1646 and is said to have been about 50 acres. In the earlier period, the land was known as "Dutch West India Company's Boweries No. 3" and was located near the home of Director-General Peter Stuyvesant. The text surrounding the image here is delicately rendered while the names more speedily listed. Original manuscripts by Francis Maerschalk are of the utmost rarity at auction. See:
