Lot 49
BRIDGES, JOSEPH F. Map of a Piece of Land situated at Harlaem in the Twelfth Ward of the City of New York.
[New York:] "Drawn, April 1827, by J.F. Bridges, from a Survey made by Daniel Ewen in March, 1826" (Title text). Original marbled boards in a tall, thin format, the upper cover with the remnants of a manuscript label. 20 x 8 inches (51 x 20 cm); comprising the manuscript title page, an index map in ink and wash colors (with internal dates to 1828), and 19 maps in ink and wash colors facing manuscript listings of the inhabitants of each lot (with notations through the 1830s). The covers detached and worn, tears across some maps, the 19th map with loss to lower portion of map, numerous markings, stray stains, chipped edges and other wear, a penciled note of presentation dated 1927 at front, worthy of repair and institutional consideration.

A fine manuscript in the hand of Joseph Bridges, son of surveyor William Bridges, of Harlem, then known as the 12th Ward. The index map shows an expanse from 8th Avenue to the west, 125th Street to the south, and the Harlem River cutting in across 3rd Avenue to the east. The index map shows 19 parcels, further detailed within, suggesting this manuscript is complete. The detailed maps show the path of the Old Kingsbridge Road and both the inhabited and uninhabited parts of Harlem and offers much information on the early residents. Daniel Ewen was a long-serving New York City surveyor; we trace little in the hand of Joseph F. Bridges.
