Map showing the lands of John Jacob Astor in 1835, reaching from Eighth Street to Houston Street between First Avenue and Avenue B. At the upper right is the just opened Tompkins Square, built on salt marshlands gifted to the city in 1829 by Peter Gerard Stuyvesant (1778-1847), the previously unimproved marsh being part of the original Stuyvesant grant. The public square was named for Daniel D. Tompkins (1774-1825), Vice President of the United States under Monroe and Governor of New York from 1807 to 1817. After 1800, John Jacob Astor acquired the blocks south of Tompkins Square and built up the rather undeveloped area. The numbered street were names added following the Commissioner's Plan of 1811.
