Lot 151
[JAMAICA] RODNEY, GEORGE, Commander-in-Chief of the Jamaica Station. Mansucript document signed regarding the storage of powder.
On board H.M.S. Princess Amelia, Port Royal, Jamaica: 30 July 1771. One and quarter page manuscript document signed "GRodney" on the recto and verso of a single sheet of watermarked laid paper, the letter addressed to Robert Binton, Ordanance Storekeeper at Jamaica. 12 x 7 inches (31 x 18 cm), housed in a folding cloth case. The left edge irregular and the sheet removed from a volume, the case with the bookplate of Aaron Matalon.

An interesting order from George Rodney: "You have represented to me that you have in store upwards of two hundred barrels of powder dust returned at different times from the ships at this station, which is a great incumbrance & totally useless but which may be rendered of some service when carried to England." Rodney further instructs Binton to load barrels onto HMS Rainbow and HMS Dunkirk whose captains are ready to receive them for return to England. Rodney had a long and distinguished career in the English Navy.
