The subject of this painting is traditional in the family that owned if from the 18th-century until 1960. Indeed, Shakespeare's works were both read and performed in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century. The earliest known translation of "The Taming of the Shrew" was published by Abraham Sybant in 1654.
