Lot Details

Lot 44
HOLLAND, RAY P. Collection of manuscripts for many short pieces by the sporting author Ray P. Holland.
Typed manuscripts signed, many with corrections in his hand, for the following: The Mystery of Scent; Beaver Business; The Marsh Wakes Up (two versions); The Return of Jack (two versions); Dogs do the Doggondest Things; Government cuts Duck Hunter's Throat; Must Duck Hunting Die? (two versions; Chester Rose; The Cotton Goods Buyer; Too many Quail; The Matter of a Will; Luck from Hell's Kitchen; Winner Take All; He Wore Blue Overalls; Much Sabalo!; The Floating Ghost; Old Simon (two versions); Susie's Good; Lucky Bill; The Preacher and the Jeep. 8 1/2 x 11 inches; several hundred typed pages, accompanied by occasional correspondence with editors. Generally in excellent condition.

Ray P. Holland (1884-1973) a one-time editor of Field & Stream magazine, was a prolific writer of sporting books and articles, most on upland and downland game hunting. The present archive appears to be largely works that were rejected for publication by magazines such as Sports Afield, or returned by his agent. We have not done an exhaustive search, but many are likely unpublished.
