Reference:
For a medallion cast in bronze after Dupré, see The British Museum, Accession Number: 1988,0628.1. Henri IV, the king of France, married Marie de Medici, his second wife, in 1600. The birth of an heir (later Louis XIII) in 1601 helped to quell sectarian violence between French Catholics and Protestants. The medallion was first commissioned in silver and gold, by Henri to celebrate the birth of the dauphin. The charger is illustrated in a Minton catalogue for the London International Exhibition, 1862. Victoria Cecil, Minton 'Majolica', Jeremy Cooper Ltd., Exhibition 7-26 June 1982, Galen Place, London, p. 68, cat. no. 70.
