Dr. David Minard was head of the physiology department at the Naval Medical Research Institute from 1946 to 1963. In 1957, with Constantin Yaglou, he created the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature index. As heat stress physiologist for Project Mercury, the United States' first human spaceflight, Dr. Minard used the WBGT index to evaluate the Mercury Seven astronauts, and it is still widely used in the military, metal industries and marathon races.
