New York: Doubleday & Company, 1953. Limited edition, copy 144 from an edition of 147, signed by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as issued. Two volumes, publisher's quarter navy morocco, buckram sides, spines lettered in gilt, top edge blue, blue endpapers, original card slipcase with printed label. 8 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches (21 x 14 cm); xviii, 555, [1] pp.; viii, 556-1323, [1] pp. Light wear to slipcase, spines slightly toned, some minor wear, in all an attractive set.
Issued posthumously, this is the only signed edition of the Sherlock Holmes stories. It makes use of a residue of signed sheets from the 1930 signed limited edition of Doyle's writings, for which Doyle prepared a substantial overage. Ultimately, a total of 147 signed sheets survived to 1953, permitting the present edition of 147 copies. The introduction is by John Dickson Carr, and the preface by Christopher Morley.
