Lot 181
[GRABHORN PRESS] MANDEVILLE, JOHN; illustrated by ANGELO VALENTI. The Voiage and Travaile of Sir John Maundevile, Kt. Which Treateth of the Way to Hierusalem, and of Marvayles of Inde, with Other Ilands and Countryes.
New York: Random House, 1928. Limited edition, copy number 25 of 150. Brown morocco backed wood boards, spine with five raised bands. 14 x 9 1/4 inches (36 x 23.75 cm); [4], 156, [1] pp., illustrated throughout with woodcuts and illuminated initials by Valenti Angelo. Wear to leather at joints, spine ends, edges and raised bands, leather cracking along rear joint, head and tail of spine, two corners lightly chipped, without the slipcase, endpapers toned as usual, contents clean and bright.

The Grabhorn Press edition of John Mandeville's fantastical yet spurious medieval travel narrative, in which he purports to have travelled from England to the Holy Land, and then on through Egypt, the Middle East and Asia. The illustrations by Valenti, the binding by William Wheeler and the type by Rudolph Koch fittingly all draw their inspiration from medieval manuscripts and early printed incunables. Included in this copy is a laid in Grabhorn Press Christmas Greetings, with a color printed woodcut likely by Mary Grabhorn.
