Lot 278
FRIES, LORENZ Tabula Orbis cum descriptione ventorum.
[Vienne: G. Treschel, dated 1522 in the map but 1541]. From the fourth edition of Ptolemy Opus Geographiae. Woodcut world map, 12 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches (31.5 x 47.5 cm), the verso blank but for pagination, uncolored. Some minor toning along the fold line, generally a very clean example. Framed, not examined out of frame.

This map is one of the few original works by Fries that was first included in his 1522 edition of the Geographia. It shows only parts of the Americas at the very west of the map, labeled "Americae." This is one of the earliest reasonably obtainable maps of the World to include the name America in the map. ''One of the earliest world maps available to a collector, and an unsophisticated but attractive rendering of what was generally known of the world at that time'' (Shirley 48).
