Lot Details

Lot 279
FRIES, LORENZ Oceani Occidentalis Seu Terrae Novae Tabula
[title from the text on the reverse]. [Lyon: M. & G. Treschel, 1535]. From the third edition of Ptolemy's Opus Geographiae. Woodcut, 11 1/8 x 14 3/4 inches (29 x 38) cm, in (likely) modern color to style. Some infilling noted to the central fold, some minor creasing and soiling, but generally an attractive example. Framed, not examined out of frame.

This map, a reduced version of Waldseemüller's map of 1513, is frequently referred to as "The Admiral's map." It differs in a number of regards from its original, most notably in the name PARIAS, here found in North America, misplaced from South America; the addition of a Spanish flag over Cuba; and a scene in South America depicting cannibals and an opossum. This edition was edited by the great polymath humanist Michael Servetus, executed in 1553 at the urging of John Calvin, burned alive on a pyre of his own books. Burden 4.
