Publisher's green cloth, gilt. 7 x 4 1/2 inches (18 x 12.5 cm); vol I: xliv, [1]-902, 25, iv pp.; vol. II: xiv, [903]-2139 pp., frontispieces, plates, numerous wood-engravings in text, double-page wood-engravings, lithographed folding maps, ads. Bindings rubbed and worn, with a cracked front joint to volume I, contents with some scattered foxing, bookplate to volume II, a generally sound and bright copy, sold as is.
Published to coincide with the 1867 Exposition Universelle, this broadly conceived Paris city guide includes articles and illustrations by some of 19th-century France's greatest authors and artists. These include Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas (both père and fils), Ernest Renan, George Sand, Théophile Gautier, Daubigny, Puvis de Chavannes, Gerome, Rops, and Daumier.
