The majority of the land in all three maps belonged to various members of the Jones family, descendants of the eighteenth century New York lawyer and politician Samuel Jones, for whom the street was named. None of the maps show John Jacob Astor's recently conceived and still developing Lafayette Street, which ran from Astor Place to Great Jones street.
