Oil on canvas

The original painting by Landseer was commissioned by William Wells of Redleaf, the artist's most important patron.

Alexandra Griggs Bishop, known to her many friends as Sandy, was an avid lover of art and animals. As an extraordinary sportswoman herself, her art collections reflect a wide range of interests in the world of sport.

Sandy, along with her husband Jerry (Louis Faugères Bishop III) who pre-deceased her, not only collected nineteenth century dog and horse paintings, but also the early art and artifacts of the many sports that interested them: fox hunting, upland and waterfowl shooting, horse racing, pugilism and tennis among them.
