Pol Bury White Gold Kinetic 'Bastonicini' Ring
18 kt., signed Pol Bury, I.P.A., with French import mark, ap. 15.6 dwts. Size 7 3/4.
Belgian sculptor Pol Bury began his career as a painter in the COBRBA and Jeune Peintre Belge groups. While his early career marked a fascination with surrealism, his work shifted and he abandoned painting altogether after seeing an early collection of Alexander Calder mobiles. Bury would go on to become one of the first practitioners of kinetic art in the 1960s. His kinetic sculptures and numerous fountains often include cylindrical and spheric metal elements that move and interact with water and light, often propelled by magnets.
With the same principles in mind that Bury investigated on a vast scale, he began to explore the same themes in miniature 'for fun. Instead of magnets that created movement in his large scale work, the human body made Bury's miniature 'sculptures' come alive, resulting in a sensual and mesmerizing line of jewelry that would be exhibited at Cartier, New York in 1971. Many editions from that line would sell out.
