Antique Neo-Gothic Berlin Iron and Black Lacquer Cuff Bracelet and Pair of Earrings
Black lacquered iron cameo panels spaced by Greek key-motif links, the earrings of scroll wire motif, c. 1815-1830. Length 7 1/2 inches.

Berlin Iron jewelry has a history dating back to 1790 in Silesia, Prussia and France. Produced by sand-casting impressions filled with molten iron, finished and coated with black lacquer, the jewelry was typically of Neoclassical motif with cameo accents. During the 'Fer de Berlin' in early 1800, the Prussians used wealthy citizen's jewelry to fund the Napoleonic war in exchange for iron using the phrase "Ich gab gold fur eisen" translated to "I gave gold for iron".
