Lot Details

Lot 212
Theodor Fahrner Silver, Gold and Marcasite Necklace
Signed Original Farhner, with maker's mark, ap. 57 dwts. Length 7 1/8 inches.

Theodor Fahrner was trained as a steel engraver, draftsman and jewelry designer. As a creator and industrialist, Fahrner worked on various patents to produce his pieces. Additionally, he commissioned freelance designers whose ideas morphed his father's previously meager ring factory into one of the most creative jewelry companies in Europe. Fahrner allowed commissioned artists to sign their designs along with the companies 'TF' trademark.

Fahrner presented a collection of jewelry made by designer Max J. Gradl at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition where it received a silver medal. In the same year, the firm was receiving commissions to execute jewelry designs by members of the Darmstadt artists' colony such as Patriz Huber for the celebrated Darmstadt exhibition of 1901. Additionally, he exported artist-designed pieces to London to be retailed by Liberty & Co. Fahrner's Art Nouveau, Jugendstil and Art Deco jewelry designs, generally rendered in silver, low karat gold, semi-precious stones, enamel and steel marcasites were mass produced and sold at relatively low cost, making the aesthetics of the period available to the masses. As such, Fahrner's design sensibilities would go on to become part of the lexicon of the Art Deco sensibility.
