Claudette Colbert (1907-1996) began her Hollywood career in 1927, appearing in comedies, dramas, and historical spectacles until 1961. "The Sign of the Cross" and "Cleopatra," both directed by Cecil D. De Mille, were two of her successes in the last category. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for "It Happened One Night" (1935) in which she co-starred with Clark Gable. With Fred MacMurray she appeared in a popular series of comedies culminating in the 1947 "The Egg and I." The extensive archive of rare photographs of Colbert assembled by Douglas Whitney described in this and the following lots was used in Lawrence Quirk's definitive Claudette Colbert An Illustrated Biography (1985) and in Annette Tapert's The Power of Glamour (1998).
