SWANSON, GLORIA; Approximately 450 still photographs
Collection of approximately 450 still photographs, vintage prints or later copies, including many with studio identification of scene on verso, some with the photographer's stamp of Clarence S. Bull, Otto Dyar or Jack Mitchell, mostly 10 x 8 inches, a few smaller. A few with signs of wear.
The film-making career of Gloria Swanson (1897-1983) lasted more than six decades. Beginning in 1915 she appeared in fifty silent films and by the mid-1920s was one of the top stars in Hollywood, appearing opposite Rudolph Valentino, Lionel Barrymore and other notable leading men. She retired from films in 1934 but returned in 1950 as the star of "Sunset Boulevard," now one of the 100 Greatest American Movies of the American Film Institute and listed in the U.S. National Film Registry. Douglas Whitney supplied many rare stills listed in the lots below for Lawrence J. Quirk's The Films of Gloria Swanson, which is dedicated to him.
