Christian Dior Red Silk Cocktail Dress
French, 1957
Four-piece, the underdress composed of four petticoat layers and a camisole slip top, the bodice sleeveless, with extended shoulders, gusseted armscyes and bateau neckline sewn with central fringed bow, slightly tapered, standing away from the body and ending above natural waist, the skirt full, sewn in pleats at waist, organza lining, separate cummerbund, size 4, labeled: Christian Dior/Paris/Made In France/Printemps-Ete 1957, and indistinguishable stamped number.
Good condition, shows general wear, some loose stitching in underdress and at bow, discoloration at armscyes, hems of under petticoat and of skirt let down, unsewn.
Dior's Spring Line for 1957 was entitled Libre, denoting the move away from the strictly fitted silhouette of the past, which in this collection was expressed in looseness at the waist. This set the stage for the full blown loose form of the chemise dress Dior presented in the Fall/Winter Collection of that year. This dress, with its fitted underdress and loose fitting bodice, exemplifies this transition.
