Fortuny Peplos Gown Late 1920s/early 1930s
Late 1920s/early 1930s
Of aquamarine pleated silk, sleeveless, with ruffled drawstring neckline, overtunic with pointed hem sewn with brick tone Venetian glass beads, the beads repeated at shoulders, gold stenciled belt, bias tape label: Fortuny/Depose/Made In Italy.
Very good condition, pleats very tight, some faint discolorations at top front and at thigh level.
The dress is accompanied by a note from the owner, Mrs. Ogden (Lillian) Phipps, to an admistrator at the New York City Ballet, to whom she donated the dress in the 1960s. The note reads in part "Sorry this took so long but we had a terrible hunt for it. I haven't worn it in 32 years! Most of the models didn't have that extra top piece."
