In the mid 1850s William Bradford made several sketching excursions to Newport with his teacher Albert Van Beest. According to Richard C. Kugler, former Director of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, "The identification of the schooner yacht in this wash drawing as the Bessie is based on William Bradford's notation on a large, undated pencil study of vessels and small craft in the Hart Nautical Collections at the M.I.T. Museum."
Estate of Glen S. Foster
