In the early 1880s, the U.S. Navy, recognizing its own deficiencies and deterioration after years of war, convinced Congress of the necessity to develop and excel in the construction of steel warships. They received authorization to build what are collectively knows as the ABCD ships: the Atlanta (right), her sister ship, the Boston (far left), the Chicago, the largest of the new Navy (center) and the gunboat Dolphin (distant center.) Their design allowed them to use both sail power, for normal cruising, and steam power, for battles.
