Head of a Woman
Inscribed Roman Bronze Works, NY
Bronze with black patina, a posthumous cast
10 x 8 1/2 x 8 x 9 inches
A plaster model of Head of a Woman was made from a marble head carved by Gaston Lachaise, now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Two life casts were produced; one is included in the collection of the Roland P. Murdock Collection, Wichita Art Museum. Isabel Dutad Lachaise, the artist's widow, is known to have issued at least one posthumous cast of Head of a Woman, which is unlocated. The present cast is very closely comparable to an example in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Head of a Woman, bronze, with black paint on hair, Gift of Carl D. Lobell, acc. 1998.280.2; rep. Tolles, Thayer, ed., American Sculpture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2001. Vol. 2, cat. no. 310, p. 670), which was cast at an unknown date. When the Gaston Lachaise Foundation began to issue estate bronzes, all of which are clearly identified as issued by the estate, they produced six casts.
Estate of Theodore and Dede Edlich
