Collection of books illustrated by Phiz
, for authors other than Dickens. The collection includes about sixty titles, plus some books on his circle (and includes a copy of the auction catalogue of his art). The condition of the volumes ranges from very good to quite worn.
Included are copies of Douglas Jerrold, The Handbook of Swindling; G. P. R. James, The Fight of the Fiddlers; the "Phiz"-illustrated Works of Shakespeare, with hand-colored plates, circa 1860; "Phiz," Sketches of the Seaside Country; etc.
Provenance:
Valerie Browne Lester, Phiz's descendant and biographer, frequently with her bookplate.
