. France: second quarter of the fifteenth century. Each leaf 10 1/2 x 8 5/8 inches (26.5 x 16 cm), written in black/brown ink with rose ink headings in a fine French batarde hand on vellum. The first leaf (22 lines) bears a fine historiated initial of 30 x 25 mm with a miniature of saints, and three smaller illuminated initials in gold, blue, and rose. The adjoining leaf, from the same manuscript, has 17 lines of text with four small illuminated initials, and at the bottom a four-line staff of music with an illuminated initial of 27 x 25 mm in blue with floral designs against a gold background. At the top right is a corner decoration of floral design in blue, green, red, and gold. There is an early pen addition in a later hand in the top margin of 5 lines. Framed.
The texts of the two leaves are "Vite remedia prebeant et eterne. Per d. In festinitate omnium sanctorum. Introit" and "Communicantce et diem." The manuscript from which these leaves were extracted appears to have been very fine indeed; the miniatures are beautifully rendered, and the batarde script is graceful.
