Half red levant, cloth sides, old mottled edges. 11 x 8 3/4 inches (27.5 x 22.5 cm); x, 32, [2] pp., with 20 superb hand-colored plates of Commedia dell'Arte characters after drawings by Sturmer. BOUND WITH the German text Abhandlung uber die Comodie aus dem Stegreif un die Italienischen Masken... Berlin: Ludwig Wilhelm Wittich, 1826. vi, 36, (20 pp). Some toning to the paper of the final two plates, generally an attractive copy.
An extremely rare costume work on Commedia dell'Arte, with delightful color aquatint plates. The work is complete with the text in both Italian and German as called for, and with the twenty plates mentioned on the title. After the publication of Goethe's Romische Carneval in 1789, this extraordinary theatrical art form excited considerable curiosity in Germany.
