. Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, [circa 1800]. Second issue with "36" to upper right corner and "Engraved for Carey's American Edition of Guthrie's Geography Improved" to lower margin. 15 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches (39.5 x 53); framed. Small repair to left margin, splits at folds and a few stains, not examined out of frame.
This is second edition of the first map of Virginia to be engraved and printed in America. Originally included Carey's 1795 American Atlas, the "36" in the corner indicates that it was published in the 1800 second edition. It is similar to the map included in the 1794 second American edition of Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia.
