. London: Chapman & Hall, 1855. First edition, first issue, with the publisher's name on the engraved title. In a fine Cosway style binding of fawn morocco, with an onlaid broad border of maroon morocco, with a scrolling vine, flower and leaf pattern surrounding a fine large glazed miniature of Dickens surrounded by his friends, apparently in a soiree, lettered "The Chimes" above and "Charles Dickens" below, possibly by C. B. Currie but not signed. The spine in six compartments lettered in the second, the remaining compartments with onlaid maroon morocco tooled in gilt, the rear cover similarly onlaid with a maroon morocco frame gilt, all edges gilt moire silk endsheets. 6 3/8 x 4 inches (16 x 9.5 cm); half-title, frontispiece, engraved title, printed title, 175, [1], [2] pp. Very light wear, slight crease to the last three leaves.
Though not signed by Riviere, the maroon morocco surround, fawn morocco and other features echo the early Currie binding that was sold as lot 904 in part III of the Doheny sale.
