... London: The Nonesuch Press, 1937-1938. One of 877 sets. Twenty-four volumes in varicolored cloth, top edge gilt, as published, including the boxed original plate, this the steel plate of The Lonely Figure by Phiz for Bleak House, p. 544. 10 x 6 inches (25.5 x 16 cm); various paginations, illustrated throughout with engraved title vignettes and plates. The plate has the letter of authenticity signed by the Deputy Chairman of Chapman & Hall, and the accompanying proof. Some slight toning to the spines, two or three spines with slight marks, in all an attractive set.
This is arguably the finest edition of Dickens ever published. It was edited by Arthur Waugh, Hugh Walpole, Walter Dexter, and Thomas Hatton.
