... Paris: J. Foret, [1954]. From the edition of 217, this is copy XL on velin d'Arches, signed by Foret, with the suite on Japon Imperial at the rear. Original wood veneer chemise with vellum spine. 16 x 13 inches (41 x 33 cm); 36 pp., with the seven designs after Picasso engraved by Betemps on both Arches and Japon. Unsewn in original chemise, one plate on Arches with two short tears and a crease to the lower margin, occasional very minor offsetting.
The Cavaliers d'Ombre by Laporte was written at a time when the author had an intense relation with the artist, and the Picasso's designs for the book depict her, or were executed for her (the owl is inscribed to her by Picasso) . Though the copper engravings were not executed by Picasso, they are superbly accomplished. This was Foret's first foray into the artist book market.
