. Martin Fabiani, Paris, 1942. Copy 101, this one of 135 on Velin de Vidalon (with the Vollard watermark), from a total edition of 226. Original tan wrappers imprinted "Buffon" in black on the upper cover, in the original green faux leather card chemise, housed in a modern clamshell box. 14 1/2 x 10 7/8 inches (37 x 28 mm); 134 pp. (including title), and 31 etched plates, utilizing sugar aquatint and drypoint, of animals (protective tissues laid-in). The rear board of the chemise lifting slightly, three minimal spots of foxing to the covers, internally a clean fresh copy, with rich impressions.
As remarked in The Artist and the Book, this is one of the greatest bestiaries of the 20th century. Martin Fabiani was the successor to Vollard, under whose aegis this production had begun in about 1936. Vollard, who was then concentrating his efforts on the great Suite Vollard, allowed the progress on this book to languish, and it was still incomplete upon his death in a car accident in 1939. Fabiani took over the publication, and managed to bring it to completion under extremely difficult circumstances during the German occupation of Paris. The result was a triumph, as the lift ground aquatint process (taught to Picasso by the great printer Roger Lacouriere, with whom he worked from about 1934) permitted him to use subtle tones in these extraordinarily expressive depictions of animals.
