... Paris: Samson, 1767. Second edition. Contemporary French mottled calf, spine in compartments with red lettering-piece, all edges red. 10 x 7 3/8 inches (25 x 18.5 cm); [ii], xxvii, 308, xxxvi, 12, 4, with 17 fine folding plates. Binding somewhat worn, minor toning, one plate torn in blank margin, in all a very sound copy. With the contemporary booklabel on the pastedown of Freres Perisse, printer-booksellers in Lyons.
Lepaute was one of the most important innovators in clockmaking in 18th century France, and was responsible for the pin-wheel escapement and one-wheel clock. Baillie p.275; Tardy p.159; cf. Clockmakers' 531, 1760 edition.
