[AMERICAN REVOLUTION - JULY 1776] ATLEE, WILLIAM. Petition signed as chairman of the Lancaster Committee of Safety. Lancaste...
. Lancaster: 23 July 1776. One page autograph document signed "Wm. Atlee" recommending the appointment of Gabriel Davis to administer an allowance to the families of the men of Earl Township serving in the militia. 8 x 8 inches (21 x 21 cm). Folds, one detached upper panel is split along two folds and irregularly torn affecting text, old stains, the signature somewhat weak.
This July 1776 petition was issued along with several others by the Lancaster Committee of Safety to the Provincial Congress at Philadelphia. This copy could possibly have been retained by the Committee or delivered to Gabriel Davis, whom the Committee here desires to appoint to support the families of Earl Township men in "the militia in that district [that] are about to march in a few days under Col. Peter Grubb for the Camp in the Jerseys. That several families of the associates who are obliged to march will in a short time be in a suffering condition"... Colonel Grubb's regiments were some of the first to march to George Washington's proposed "Flying Camp" in New Jersey, which disbanded by the end of 1776. This document is recorded in Peter Force's American Archives, volume 1, p. 534.
