. Watertown, Mass: 9 September 1776. Two page autograph letter on recto and verso of one folded sheet, the letter addressed to Joseph Clarke (his adopted son) at Northampton and sent on public service (Hawley was chairman of Northampton's Committee of Correspondence, Inspection and Safety). 8 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches (21.5 x 17 cm). The sheet split along gutter fold, puncture where opened affecting a few letters.
In this urgent letter from a noted Massachusetts patriot, Hawley suggests Clarke inform General Pomeroy and the militia captains that they will soon have orders to march to southwestern Connecticut to meet other militia-men forced from New York. He further adds that "the militia not lose a moment in time in fitting their arms and making other preparations ... this is a serious matter."
