. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1900. The Daniel Boone edition, copy 97 of 200 sets with a leaf of Roosevelt's original manuscript bound in. Four volumes. Full green morocco with gilt floral cornerpieces to covers, the spines gilt lettered and with raised bands, gilt turn-ins over red suede doublures and free endpaper, the top edge gilt, the others uncut. 9 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches (25 x 16 cm); the manuscript leaf, written on lined paper and with several strike-throughs and edits, is partially folded and mounted to a preliminary leaf in volume 1 (leaf 8 5/8 x 6 1/2 inches), frontispieces to each volume, numerous plates. Spines faded to brown, a few chips to head caps, joints starting, intermittent thumbsoiling with some stray red marks from suede, toning to endleaves.
The manuscript leaf in this copy is from chapter 1 of volume 4 (p. 19 in this edition) and reports of an Indian raid on St. Clair's men in 1791. Roosevelt's original draft reads in part: "There were some twenty-five Indians in the attacking party; they were Wyandots and Delawares, who had been mixing on friendly terms with the settlers throughout the preceding summer, and so knew exactly how to attack each cabin [the italicized portion corrected to read: "how best to deliver the assault"]. The settlers had not only treated these Indians with much kindness, but had never wronged any of the red race, and had been lulled into a foolish feeling of security by the apparent good-will of the treacherous foes." The Daniel Boone edition of Winning of the West is uncommon at auction and we trace only a few copies sold in the past 20 years. Howes R433.
