Original (publisher's?) decorated paper over boards, uncut, housed in a modern slipcase. 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches (17 x 11 cm); viii, 264 pp. Spine covering lacking, old crayon mark on title, early annotations throughout, in all a nice uncut copy of this rare little work.
Coustos, a Swiss merchant living in England, was seized by the Portuguese inquisition after founding a Masonic lodge in Lisbon, and was sentenced to the galleys, from which he was only released by the intercession of George II of England. The first English edition of his account was published by Strahan in 1746. Wolfstieg I. p. 743.
