[i.e. Instructions of Her Imperial Majesty Catherine II to the Commission on the Work of the projected new Code of Laws]... St. Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, 1770. First edition. Contemporary Russian calf, spine blind tooled, red leather titling piece, decorated paper endsheets in red and blue, all edges red. 9 3/4 x 8 inches (25 x 20 cm); polyglot edition (Russian Latin, German and French) with the four title pages, 403, [1] pp., with an initial engraved headpiece and a tailpiece engraved by C.M. Roth (both repeated), text in two columns. Binding worn on corners, some chipping to joints, within some scattered spotting and soiling, in all a sound copy.
A rare work of proposed legal reforms to the Russian legal code, the text in four languages, Russian and Latin on versos, German and French on opposite rectos. This was described by Count M.A. Korf, the director of the Imperial Library, as the best and most luxurious edition iof Catherine's Great Instructions.
