[TENNESSEE] OVERTON, JOHN and HAYWOOD, JOHN. Tennessee Reports of Cases ruled and adjudged in the Superior Courts of Law & Equi...
[later title] Reports of cases argued and adjudged in the Court of Errors and Appeals. Knoxville (volumes 1-3) and Nashville (4,5): G. Wilson (volume 1), afterwards T.G. Bradford, 1813-17-18-18-18. Five volumes, period brown law calf. The first three 8 x 5 inches (20 x 12.5 cm), the balance 6 7/8 x 4 1/4 inches (17.5 x 10 cm); various paginations. Bar Association stamps on title, the first volumes with the name of Alfred Balch on the title several times, presumably the head of the Nashville Bar Association who later became something of a confidante to Andrew Jackson. Loss to the head of the title of the third volume (just touching text), the final three volumes with covers separated, all dry and fragile.
John Overton, the author of the first two volumes, was a judge in Tennessee's Superior Court of Law and Equity, John Haywood, author of the final three volumes, a judge in the court of Errors and Appeals. The period covered is 1794-1818, and details of the cases are given with their judgements. The set appears rare in all or in part.
