Provenance:
The late Lord Talbot de Malahide, Malahide Castle, Co. Dublin, sold Christie's on the Premises, 10 May 1976, lot 90.
Sold, Christie's, New York, April 13, 2000, lot 125.

Malahide Castle and Demesne is an historic 260-acre Irish property and parkland located a mere 9 miles north of central Dublin, Ireland. It was owned for 791 years (1185 - 1976) by The Talbot family (the only hiatus being 1649-1660 when Oliver Cromwell's conquest of Ireland prevailed). The oldest parts of the castle date to the 12th century. Richard Talbot, a Knight who accompanied Henry II to Ireland in 1174, was originally granted the, 'Lands and harbor of Malahide.' The castle was substantially enlarged during the reign of Edward IV (1442 - 1483) and the towers added in 1765.

Upon the death of the 7th Baron Talbot in 1973, his Estate passed to his sister, Rose, who subsequently sold the castle to the Irish State. Many of the furnishings had been sold in advance which lead to public controversy, however, private and governmental parties have since tried to retrieve some of the collection.

The table is a fascinating example of the influence of French taste in mid-18th century English and Irish furniture design.

A set of twelve George III mahogany dining chairs, also from Malahide Castle, is being offered at Christie's, New York, October 29, 2019, lot 1024.
